Robert & Ernst-Magne,
You're both right. I ugoa-x 'ed both .bashrc & .bash_profile then added
something to the path, closed down konsole, reopened it and did echo
$PATH and the change showed up. I have no idea why I needed to make the
files +x before but the very same procedure didn't work, believe me. The
world and debian work in mysterious ways.
