I spent all day yesterday chasing this.  Finally surrendered and posted the
call for help.  Soon after, my LCD monitor went to screen-heaven.

Not a good day.

Your suggestion worked!  I rebooted several times.  It was WONDERFUL!
Especially because I originally read it as fc(space)-cache -f
