Suddenly: very slow graphics startup

Something has gone awry in my Sarge KDE setup (born as Libranet). Boot is
normal through the initial text-mode part: the last message saying that GDM
is starting. It then switches to graphics mode and I see the rolling
hourglass cursor for 25 seconds before GDM login box appears, with constant
disk access throughout that period. On my other Sarge box, the hourglass
delay is just a few seconds. Hardware is nearly the same on both.

Nothing helpful in the logs. I installed KDM, got same long delay. If I
select single-user mode from Grub and boot to the text-mode console and
then start GDM, I see the same delay. If I enter startx from the textmode
prompt, IceWM starts without delay.

I update both machines about 1-2 a week, so I'm not sure just what happened.
Today I reinstalled the xserver/xbase/xfonts/xfree86 stuff having extension
4.30.dfsg.1-12. It didn't help.

I'm out of ideas ... hate the thought of guessing which backup to re-install
so that I can rebuild.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Roby
