Right, it needs an eval, too. So, assignment in single quotes and
eval call should fix it.

thanks as always to everyone. this is great. Almut, thanks in particular for the showargs trick, that made it much easier to understand what was happening. though truth to tell I didn't find it clearer in the manpage than in your (crystalline) email...
