By "shell" I'll assume you mean a shell-script -- quite why you'd want to
do that when you could use an alias, is beyond me...

alias cmd='whatever --program "you want" --with-some options'

Then you can type:

cmd

yeah, but I want the command do be dyanmically generated from a list of mailboxes -- so that whatever mboxes are fed to the script get opened up in separate tabs of a new m-g-t window. so alias isn't really flexible enough.
