Hi, Am looking for a way to boot Debian sarge system from a software raid5 array. It appears that it's not supported and, hence, cannot be done but I hope I maybe missing something. Thanks in advance -- __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
Hi,That's right, booting off a *software* RAID-5 array isn't possible, only over a RAID-1 mirror. If you have *hardware* RAID-5 that's a different question.
That's because lilo / grub / [insert bootloader name here] would need to know how to assemble the array to read their data and the kernel off it. Best do a small RAID-1 /boot partition (64MB is more than enough) and boot from that, then keep the rest of the system on RAID-5 if that's your thing! ;-)
