Screen resolution (the never ending story)

Hi all!

It seems that changing screen resolution is still not trivial.

I've installed sarge on one machine - now I've moved the harddisk to
another machine, since the first machine is temporarily out of order.
I tried to change the screen resolution the usual way:

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
* set to vesa for the Mach64 (1024x768 worked that way on another installation)
* set the monitor: simple -> 17"
* set modes to 1024x768 800x600

But menu->desktop preferences->screen resolution still shows only
800x600 and 640x400 and
the display is at 800x600

OK, tried to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 manually:
DefaultDepth    24
[...]
SubSection "Display"
      Depth           24
      Modes          "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
Restarted X - nope. Max. is still 800x600
Even if I only list "1024x768" as mode, it defaults to 800x600.

Anyone please ?

Thanks a bunch & best regards,
Hannes.
