ls,apt,find: segmentation fault

Hello.

I seem to be in serious trouble.

I have a woody server I've accessed remotely without much problem during a
couple of years. Last time was yesterday. Today, however, an rsync
gave me the following error:

rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(150)

I can ping or ssh it, no problem, though ocassionally ssh logs me in, and
closes my session immeadiately. Some commands (top, ps) hang my prompt,
and others (apt-get, apt-cache) return a segmentation fault. Other behave
not consistently: ls -ltr does not sort files as expected, ls in my home dir
gives no problem, but ls /etc/apt gives a segmentation fault.

Any help trying to diagnose the problem is welcome. I feel I will have to
reinstall from scratch, but I would like to understand.

Entries in wtmp only show logins by myself, though I see in /var/log/syslog
messages like 'Unable to handle kernel paging request', as this:
