There was a thread only a few days ago on this very list discussing this
issue. For people who are interested, search the archives.

Although I had initially intended to wait for an official okay from the
debian developers I downloaded and installed X.org 6.8.2 yesterday and
the upgrade went absolutely smoothly. There was a little fiddling with
aptitude required in order to really have the most recent version of all
the X modules and libs because apparently the packages provided for the
sole purpose of guaranteeing a smooth upgrade don't depend on a specific
version of the libs and other modules. But all in all everything went
just fine and there was 0 (in words ZERO) reconfiguration involved apart
from the usual debconf routines invoked with the update. It Just WorksTM
