question 1:  (suid bit)
info coreutils ls
see also --
~  man 1 chmod
~  man 2 chmod
~  man 2 stat

question 2:

chmod 0644 files
chmod 0644 images
(the first digit is the one that changes the suid bits, the others
maintain what you have now for rw)
