That's good to know -- one thing out of the way.

Probably you just forgot to include filesystem support in your kernel
(ext2/ext3). The root fs / has to be supported by the kernel and not be
loaded as a module.

I checked and it is built in (the partition is ext3, and both ext2 and ext3 are built in). For a base config, I loaded the config from the 2.6.7 kernel that was already working, so I'd be starting with a known working config.
