You can reconfigure X with the command: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

I tend to *only* check the box of the target resolution I am looking for.
[ ] 1600x1200
[ ] 1280x1024
[ ] 1280x960
[ ] 1152x864
[*] 1024x768
[ ] 800x600 
[ ] 640x480

This way its forced to at least try the resolution I want first. I am not sure
this is necessary now but it seems to work for me...
