can't open mail attachments in evolution

I can't open mail attachments in evolution.  I see the attachment
button, but when I click on the arrow next to it, I get a list with only
one element, "Save as...".  The attachment is well formed and evolution
seems to know its type since I see a description like

  Microsoft PowerPoint presentation attachment (Table.ppt), "Table.ppt"

I have open office installed, and if I save the attachment, it opens
fine in oo.  I have the same problem with other attachment types like
.xls (which I'd like to associate with gnumeric) etc.

I have searched, but I don't see where I can configure evo for this.  Or
is it something I have to configure in gnome somehow?

versions: evolution 2.0.3-1.2  openoffice.org 1.1.3-7  (gnome 2.8)
