I have the firefox extension, "miniT" for tabbed browsing.  It enables 
you to move tabs, including between windows.
I just tried the window trick for the first time.  Thanks for the idea.

Also I recommend SessionSaver.  It is still a little rough, it doesn't 
seem to really support opening and resaving a session.

But this is related to your question because you can select the option 
to restore windows as tabs when resuming a session.
