I'm nevertheless still curious why xhost doesn't work, and why xhost is so BAAAAD...

Why are you even using xhost in the first place?  *shudder*.  At least use
a mit-magic-cookie:

su - someuser
xauth merge ~userrunningX/.Xauthority
export DISPLAY=:0 && some_app &
i think no space after the "+"


Doesn't matter --  both will work.  But really, the OP doesn't want to be
using xhost...
