For fast scanning I think you want a USB 2.0 scanner. Unfortunately in my
investigations those scanners use newer chipsets, which often aren't
supported yet. This was the case with the Canon LIDE 50 family. Check
http://www.sane-project.org for a list of supported scanners.
In general though, when I inquired about this a few months ago I was told
that Epson and HP scanners are well-regarded for working well in Linux.
Haven't bought one yet, though.
