I bought an Espon 1250u just weeks after they came out, and it was an 
early test bed for 1250u support in sane.  While I think the speed is 
related to the slow usb, its otherwise a great scanner.  The only 
reason I'd replace it is if it died, which it appears not to be ready 
to do even after all these years.

To the suggestion of doing OCR, that could probably be done, but in my 
admittedly limited experience, I found the error rates went thru the 
roof at resolutions below 1200, which needs hundreds of megs worth of 
disk cache, and a surveyer to measure the speed.  So I wouldn't 
recommend OCR where you need 50 pages scanned yet today.
