apt-get help

I while ago I tried to install the java runtime package. It never
installed correctly. Now if I try to apt-get anything else, it bails
out with these warnings and error:

W: Couldn't stat source package list http://ftp.us.debian.org
potato/main Packag es
(/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.us.debian.org_debian_dists_potato_main_binary-i386_Pa
ckages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://ftp.us.debian.org
potato/non-free Pa ckages

I'd like to fix the java problem, but more importantly I'd like to be
able to fix apt-get. Is there way to reset apt-get so it's no longer
bound to an incomplete package, without having to completely kill the
reference to the package?
