TYAN dual processor S2885 Thunder K8W linux boot problems with one opteron
I'm trying to install Debian on two new machines and hitting problems
as I generally seem to when installing on new hardware. I'm sorting
out some of the problems and will submit them here directly as
"[SOLVED]"s I think as I think we desperately need more solved
problems here until some better updating of hardware compatibility
list(s) is sorted out.
However, I have an irritating feeling there's an obvious fix to this:
the board is TYAN dual processor S2885 Thunder K8W with 2Gb of RAM in
the CPU0 RAM slots and one opteron. (I will add a second opteron &
probably 2Gb more when I can afford it.) The config apparently boots
up M$ XP according to KustomPCs who put it together (and I believe
them) however, I can't get woody or sarge or any other linux distro
to install on it.
It boots up the installation of most distros, including going all the
way through Fedora core installation to the point where you reboot
from the hard disc, but for all of them usually as a linux kernel
boots, that the machine hangs.
I think it's either about the 2Gb or about the single processor on an
SMP board as both are things I've seen here. I think there's a boot
parameter for one or both of these that will solve my problems but
using the Debian list search and using Google have both failed to
find what I think I've seen so ... anyone help me out?
TIA,
Chris
