1) There might be couple of big fixes & enhancements over 3.3. The
changelog should document what the enhancements are.
2) Some packages might require >= gcc-3.4, in which case you need
gcc-3.4. gcc-snapshot although provides latest versions, would not
have been tested as extensively as gcc-3.4.
3) I do not install packages by version numbers. For example I install
gcc and not gcc-3.3. gcc package provides the default GNU C compiler.
If for some specific software, you need 3.4, then install it.
Same is the case with kernel-image-2.6-686.
