Is gcc 4.0 from the snapshot package? If it is from gcc-snapshot
package then you should read the description of the package.

DO NOT USE THIS SNAPSHOT FOR BUILDING DEBIAN PACKAGES!

What version reccomended ?

I use gcc 3.3 whenever possible. But things like gfortran are
available only in gcc-snapshot, so If I want to compile things in
fortran90, then I go for gcc 4.1.0

I am using SID. So YMMV.

Thank you very much. Last question what is 3.4 useful for then ?
