Okay, I have some Mpeg movies I want to tinker with; editing, merging,
etc. I installed linuxvideostudio. However, I am unable to get it to
run. There seems to be no man page for it, no KDE menu item was created
when it was installed, and just entering linuxvideostudio gives me
"command not found". So how do I get this to work? Or are there better
alternatives for movie editing that can simply be installed with
apt-get?

Did you download and install the mjpegtools package from sourceforge?

 From the description of linuxvideostudio:

The Debian package of non-free/mjpegtools must be downloaded from
 http://download.sourceforge.net/mjpeg/ to run linuxvideostudio.

I tried to, but there seems to be a couple dependancies that are
seemingly impossible to resolve...

Unpacking mjpegtools (from mjpegtools_1.4.1-2i686_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of mjpegtools:
 mjpegtools depends on libsdl1.2 (>= 1.2); however:
  Package libsdl1.2 is not installed.
 mjpegtools depends on libforms0.89 (>= 0.89); however:
  Package libforms0.89 is not installed.
dpkg: error processing mjpegtools (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 mjpegtools

Then I tried to install the 2 missing packages mentioned in the above
error...

Package libsdl1.2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  libsdl1.2debian-oss libsdl1.2debian-nas libsdl1.2debian-esd
libsdl1.2debian-arts
  libsdl1.2debian-alsa libsdl1.2debian-all
E: Package libsdl1.2 has no installation candidate

Package libforms0.89 is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libforms0.89 has no installation candidate

libforms0.89 is old and has been superseded (apparently by libforms1).
However, it is still available from snapshot.debian.net:

http://snapshot.debian.net/cgi-bin/packages.cgi?pattern=libforms0.89&query=query&package=libforms0.89

libsdl1.2 is a meta- (or pseudo-, but I forget which) package. You need
to install one of these directly:

 libsdl1.2debian - Simple DirectMedia Layer
libsdl1.2debian-all - Simple DirectMedia Layer (with all available options)
libsdl1.2debian-alsa - Simple DirectMedia Layer (with X11 and ALSA options)
libsdl1.2debian-arts - Simple DirectMedia Layer (with X11 and aRts options)
libsdl1.2debian-esd - Simple DirectMedia Layer (with X11 and esound options)
libsdl1.2debian-nas - Simple DirectMedia Layer (with X11 and NAS options)
libsdl1.2debian-oss - Simple DirectMedia Layer (with X11 and OSS options)

Which one you choose depends on your setup.
