This is very strange. As far as I can see the
applications handle the proxy the same way. And I have
a very strict firewall to get through.

Interesting. Anyone have any ideas on this...? It's
not unreasonable to assume some ping blocking I guess.
The ping thing may or may not be a red herring - a
diversion.

I really don't understand why a browser works and
apt-get doesn't if both are using *http*, and both are
using the same proxy address.

Anyone?
