¿Where have you download the binaries?
AFAIK the best and simpliest installation way is using the marillat binaries.
You can append this sources to your /etc/apt/sources.list
ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ testing main
(You must change testing for stable or unstable as sure you know)
then select the best player:
apt-cache search mplayer
And to look for the codecs you´ll need:
apt-cache search codecs
Of course you must uninstall your previous mplayer version before
install the new one:
dpkg -r name_of_deb_installed
