It may to totally unrelated, but I had a similar experience today with XMMS.
Yesterday after installing sarge, XMMS worked - today after boot it didn't.
Somehow ALSA didn't come up properly and I had to run alsaconf again.
Then it works (before that xmms did either nothing or froze)
