I don't think you are correct.

In both Sarge & Sid, the gnome meta-package has as one of it's
dependencies gnome-desktop-environment.  And one of g-d-e's
dependencies is gnome-core.

So, if you want a full-blown (well, there might be some apps not
installed) gnome system:

# apt-get install gnome

The, just to make sure:
# apt-get install nautilus-cd-burner totem gnome-media gthumb \
    gqview camorama gpa gnome-keyring
