If you have been manuallly typing that file name, perhaps you should
ls -lLb /var/lib/gdm
to see if the file name contains any control characters.
You might also try lsattr, to see if that file is marked immutable.
Is /var/lib/gdm part of an nfs mounted filesystem?

If none of the above ideas helped, then you may have a corrupt 
filesystem, and rebooting would be the best thing to do.
