audio programs locking each other out.

I'm having a problem with running more than one application that wants to
access the sound hardware at once. The applications don't have to actually
be "using" the hardware, they just have to "have used" it, and not been
exited.

Is there some way I can fix this?

Here's dmesg for my sound card:

es1371: found chip, vendor id 0x1274 device id 0x1371 revision 0x08
es1371: found es1371 rev 8 at io 0xe800 irq 10 joystick 0x0
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: CRY19 (Cirrus Logic CS4297A rev A)

Kerenl is:

2.6.9 #

Appropriate (I think info from lsmodules):

snd_bt87x 13768 0
snd_ens1371 22116 0
snd_rawmidi 22820 1 snd_ens1371
snd_seq_device 10248 1 snd_rawmidi
snd_pcm 79748 2 snd_bt87x,snd_ens1371
snd_timer 23556 1 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 11272 2 snd_bt87x,snd_pcm
snd_ac97_codec 63952 1 snd_ens1371
snd 46436 8
snd_mixer_oss,snd_bt87x,snd_ens1371,snd_rawmidi,sn

Any help on this would be appreciated.
