You should be able to login to the cli, then login to any use account, then startx to use x for that user account. At least that will work until you get the gdm fix.
Can anyone help me out of this mess?? Thanks in advance.
If I were you, I would try to delete any files you might have modified in the gdm directories. To decide which files, I'd start by fully deleting all the gdm files. You could use 'dpkg -L gdm > gdm.file.list' to make a list of all the files associated with gdm. Then 'apt-get --purge remove gdm', then go into the directories (less gdm.file.list) where the gdm files were located and manually 'mv <here> <to.there>' any files that stayed. If none stayed, then look at other files in the same directories and if they are not associated with other packages (use 'dpkg -S <filename>' to determine what package they are associated with), then 'mv <here> <to.there>' them. Once this is done, I'd 'apt-get install gdm' and hopefully have it work.
good luck paul
