fun stuff :-)

that is because hitachi officially supports rh ... along with suse and
turbolinux

if you use debian ... you need to calculate your risks against data loss
and incmpatibility with other subsystems where 14TB or more of data
is at stake

in theory, all distro is almost identical except that if there's a
problem, you do want a 3rd party vendor to also have to answer "questions"
why and how did this happen and how to fix it and prevent it next time

i doubt that you need to make a custom initrd, as you are not booting
from it

lots of fun when lots of data and $$$ is at risk

3ware is a toy compared to the big boys of
hitachi/fujitsu/nec/ibm/emc/veritas/...

===> use redhat whatever version they claim to be supporting
     per their "technical specs"

===> if something breaks overnight, you do not want to be the one that
intalled a foreign hw into the previously well tested environment
     by the big boyz

===> make sure you have 14TB of data backed up some place else too
vs putting all your corp data in one basket

300GB disks is $200 now days ... 1TB is about $800 ( cheap insurance
policy ) to protect 14TB of corp data
