Have you tried it with 777 (rwxrwxrwx) permissions?  I'm guessing the logfile
isn't owned by the user or group of ClamAV.

Makes perfectly good sense.  Sad to say, it doesn't help.
the log is owned by clamav:adm and set 0777, the parent dir
"/var/log/clamav" is set 1777.
(Also tried at 0777).
