While the Firewire layer *does* have its share of bugs, I have both an iPod
and an IDE drive in a Firewire enclosure and both work quite well with
hfsplus and ext3.

OTOH, I had problems with the same enclosure and HD when I was using it via
USB (the enclosure has both USB and Firewire output).

Saying that Firewire is not used just serves to caution me that you may not
know exactly what you're talking about.
