Out of curiosity, is anyone who's reading this thread actually using a
Debian NIS client that's serviced by a non-GNU/Linux NIS server? This
can't be all that uncommon...

Does yptest work for you?

Have you checked /etc/default/nis and /etc/ypserv.conf?

What did you set in /etc/nsswitch.conf?
