apt-get should have handled this stuff for you; if it didn't, that indicates to me that the apt-get process failed in some way. Are you sure you didn't see some errors you just ignored, thinking maybe they didn't matter? What is the correct, or easyest, way to upgrade the kernel with apt-get. I did it by apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8 ... Added an entry in lilo.conf with the new image, ran lilo and rebooted.
But i couldn't boot up.I' using a knoppix instaled in the hd. Before it, I did upgrade and distro-upgrade.
Unless you removed the old entries from lilo.conf, you should be able to boot off your old kernel.
