Maybe this got overlooked or maybe there's not much knowledge out there regarding mailscanner. Sure would like this issue resolved so I could get to setting up virus scanning protection or perhaps there is an-
other way to run a virus scanning utility. New reply's are welcome.

Although I've tried all the posted suggestions, I still can't reinstall Mailscanner. I have been able to uninstall it, however. I still get error messages when I do an apt-get install mailscanner, even though doing an "apt-get --purge remove mailscanner"(says mailscanner not installed, so not removed), an "apt-get update" and "apt-get -f install" beforehand shows no errors. I will appreciate any help I get on this longstanding problem. The error output from "apt-get install mailscanner" is shown below:

It probably exists only while the package is being installed; once the apt process stops, the directory/preinst script may no longer exist. (I'm not sure about this, but it has to exist at some point in order for apt to complain about a line in the file.)

It seems that this particular package has a bug, although since bugs.debian.org doesn't seem to know about it, you should file a bug report on it.

From the version, it looks like you're pulling from Testing. (This is why I run Sid; when errors creep in, they usually get fixed a lot faster than when errors creep into Testing.)

Are you pulling from a CD or from the net? If from CD, you'll have to find some other way to get the fixed version (assuming the problem has been fixed in the next version(s)). If from the net, you'll need to wait until a new version gets into Testing, hoping it fixes this bug (but unless you report it, it probably won't get fixed, as the developer/maintainer doesn't know about it, if you can believe bugs.debian.org). Alternatively you might try installing a newer Sid version, such as from Sid, but that generally takes a bit more knowledge than just running pure Testing stuff.
