Re: kernel? 2.4.x vs 2.6.x

Sorry about the contractions. I let my writing get sloppy in informal
documents and late at night. I don't use contractions at all in formal
documents so I'm guilty of being careless. I just assumed that the
context of the sentences would eliminate any confusion, but now I
realize that to many people (especially those that aren't native english
speakers) my sentences maybe confusing. I will definitely pay more
attention to this in the future.
I read a nice synopsis on udev from the Proceedings of the Linux
Symposium. Udev seems like a great improvement of the current system of
devices naming. I will have to give it a try, but I think that I will
stick with 2.4.x for the time being. (At least until I look into the
issues with samba) Maybe I will have to set up a new install on one of
my other systems.

I've been using 2.6 since .2 with very few problems (boot-time
firewire disk initialization, mainly).
There are a lot more devices supported under 2.6, so that might
be important to you. I don't think that SATA is supported under
2.4, but it may have been backported. Also, udev (dynamic device
naming) is only in 2.6. Many, including me, have had great success
with it. Others haven't.
Also, I have read reports that 2.6 does not play well with Samba.
Intermittent file corruptions. Since this box will be a file
server, this would be something to google/investigate further.
