I've been evaluating symbollic algebra/calculus packages the last couple
of days. Maxima embedded in Texmacs is extremely nice and almost
exactly like Maple. Plus you can use it in a shell or emacs. It's
great.
Of the alternatives, I might use ginsh for quick and dirty
quick-homework-assistance similar to bc. Axiom and Yacas I don't like
so much but I haven't given them a great deal of attention.
