Login gives "0+0 records in"

Hi,

I am running MEPIS Debian unstable and have a problem opening a console.  I
first noticed the problem when opening Konsole and no prompt appeared.  Anything
I typed was echoed to the conosole but I could not execute any commands.  I
found that when I did a Ctrl-C this message was shown:

0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes transferred in 7.29 seconds (0 bytes/sec)

I rebooted and this still occured.  It also occurs when I Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a text
console.

Any ideas?
