Debian-user was one of the resources that I had checked before posting 
my message. 

Minor point: in the line above the carets, there is a tiny typo: should 
be dev=ATA.

I had tried that also *_before_* posting my message. A reader on another 
list suggests that my problem might be specific to the Promise PDC20267 
ATA100 card.
