Since when? I don't symlink my kernel and I don't rerun grub every
time I upgrade my kernel, and yet it Just Works(tm).

Not unless you need an interactive shell to boot because you goobered
/boot/grub/menu.lst.

Not unless you've botched a kernel upgrade and need to go find your
old, bootable kernel.

Not unless you need to pass a parm to the kernel that you forgot the
first time, or need to boot to single mode.
