what is the scsi chipset ??
	( lspci | grep -i scsi )

make sure your kernel you compile supports that chipset
	there's SYM53C8xxx and AIC7XXX
 	( sometimes one work and the other one doesn't
	( in old scsi hardware

make sure you're booting the kernel you compiled ..

says it couldnt find  /dev/sda1

put the new scsi kernel on floppy and see if it will boot off of it 
to make sure you're booting the kernel yoou think you're booting
