Following up on this a bit more... 

I don't know what kernel-latest-2.6-i386 is (maybe patches?) but it is
definitely too small to be the full kernel source.

	$ apt-get -s source kernel-latest-2.6-i386
	Reading Package Lists...
	Building Dependency Tree...
	Need to get 3691B of source archives.
	Fetch Source kernel-latest-2.6-i386

Sorry for the trouble. Maybe these are just packages the maintainers use
to keep things up to date (since they don't show up properly in
searches).
