Nobody has said which kernel would work because for a system with that
much RAM, the consensus is that you probably need to rebuild your kernel
yourself.

686 is for any Pentium-based system and above, not just P4. Unless your
system is *very* old, a 686 kernel should be OK. I cannot say whether
it will fix the RAM issue or not, because that is a matter unrelated
(generally-speaking) to processor type.

Please explain how you have tried? It doesn't actually sound like
you've tried anything at all: "How to apply [a kernel]"? That's simply
a matter of either installing the appropriate kernel package (if one
exists) or building your own package to install. See the docs at
http://www.debian.org/ or google for "debian kernel build". What have
you actually tried?

Your point "(2)" suggests that you are unfamiliar with the concept of
kernel building. It therefore sounds like you may be out of your depth
attempting to admin a Debian box.

I'm afraid it takes time and effort, reading documentation etc., to be
able to do this kind of thing Jerry.
