I had same problem even with stock debian 2.6.8 kernel and early versions of
2.6.9 kernel. it was a problem with kernel itself. there was a lot of change
in usb handling around that time in kernel and it broke usb flash drive
usage.
it seems to work in latest sid kernels on my intel powered desktop. However i
currently use a "knoppix 3.6" kernel (grabbed from that version of knoppix)
(2.6.7 linux kernel) on my amd xp 2200+ averatec laptop because it works for
usb stick drives -
stock debian 2.6.7, 2.6.8, 2.6.9 debian kernels were not working in late
november for usb handling on my averatec laptop, even kernels that did work
for usb sticks on my intel desktop.
there were problems with cd writing at that time too with the kernel.
I think that the latest kernels have solved these problems.
