Hardlinks to remote directories

I am trying to create a hardlink to a remote directory
but it gets rejected --even when I am doing it as root.

When I issue

  ln -d <remote_folder_path> <local_link_path>

where "remote_folder_path" does exist.

This is the error message I get:

  "Invalid cross-device link"

What am I doing wrong?
