"disk needs attending" - As in filesystem problems that can be fixed
with fdisk or similar? I would recommend a Knoppix cd (or another
version) and then you can run the tools to fix it. On the off chance
that Knoppix itself doesn't have the tools, you can always chroot to
your Debian install after booting off the Knoppix cd.
