E.g., if your VNC session was display ':0' (it tells you when it starts up);

DISPLAY=:0 x-terminal-emulator
or
x-terminal-emulator -display :0

I'd recommend using a window manager (such as pwm or ion2) on this
desktop to aid spawning future terms.
