Right, at the Lilo prompt press an F key, i don't recall which, i've
only used once or twice, there should be an option called "rescue",
boot the CD and you should have access to a shell (dash?) and from
there you can mount your partition, chroot, cd etc. etc.

If you're talking about the Debian Installer, now at rc2, hit F1 and it will give you a menu of options.




Or  in the case only the MBR is broken, you can use a boot floppy, on
Debian there's a script called "grub-floppy" that you can use to
create one.

i don't have a floppy drive



You can try with a USB keychain then. =)
