Hum, I guess the right answer was I thought I had...

After nullman's comment, is that i actually realized that I had tried
that command but using

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root --password 'new-password-here'
                            ^^
instead of 

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password-here'
