There are a couple of non-free programs which aren't packaged for Debian that
I use using the source.
My answer -- Use stow.
apt-get install stow
once done you'll have a directory named /usr/local/stow under which
all .tar.gz based programs need be installed.
Eg:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/stow/foo-0.0.1
and once installed, `cd /usr/local/stow; stow foo-0.0.1` will do the job of
creating symlinks to /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/lib etc etc etc. :-)
I hope that is what you'll want.
